etching                                                                                      23 1/2 x 17 1/2

On a warm summer night in 1980, I sailed the GAMBELLA from San Francisco to Palo Alto. It was one of those rare occasions when conditions were absolutely perfect. I was carried along by a gentle breeze aided by a flood tide and then a full moon rose over the East Bay hills. This etching was an attempt to recapture those moments. Only three of one hundred were ever printed although there exist a number of artist’s proofs.

etching                                                                                                        6 x 9

Located at the extreme south end of San Francisco Bay, Drawbridge is the only ghost town in the Bay Area. This plate was completed in 1989. On this occasion, I was accompanied by my friend and fellow artist, Evie Wilson, who later became my partner in life. In the middle of the night while anchored here, a train roared by on the trestle shown at the left. It was quite close at hand and shattered an otherwise peaceful slumber.

This print, created in 1981, represents the northern limit
of the images in this book. Much later a house was built
on the site, and the Candystick Gallery in Ferndale sold
a print from the edition to the owner of the property.

I now reside in Mendocino, and is just south of the site
where the Baltimore Clipper, FROLIC, was wrecked
during the gold rush era. Accomplished in 2006.

This plate was accomplished on a weekend getaway in

the time I made this plate, I had no idea that I would
eventually end up a resident of the area. We moved to
Mendocino in 1994.

8. Tomales Debut

Taken from a photo dated about 1976 the ink wash drawing on the left was done in 1980 and then became the source for the etching plate on the right also done in 1980. Note the reversal of the image (see introduction). The old fence was seen while hiking on the Tomales Pennisula near White Gulch where my boat the GAMBELLA was anchored. See additional versions here.
